How To Start Over And Rebuild Your Life From Scratch.

Life is full of plot twists. Some twists come as pleasant surprises. Many others come in the form of devastatingly painful moments that shakeup your whole foundation and challenge the idea of who you once thought yourself to be.

Many of us don't really dedicate too much time to thinking about tornadoes. Yet, if you pause long enough to contemplate this phenomenal force of nature, you can start to see that tornadoes, just like our personal life-changing events, bring with it not only a lot of chaos and devastation, but also offers an opportunity for a lot of beauty.

Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path.

Paulo Coehlo.

Nothing in nature is ever random. Mother Nature together with the Divine Intelligence crafted all aspects of nature to serve a significant purpose and assist in the circle of life. Check out some cool facts about what a tornado can do:

  • It carries things long distances.

This can be very nice for some kinds of life that might appreciate what gets brought to them that isn't normally where they are, whether it is food (e.g. newly broken wood and dead bodies are yummy to some other life forms) or shelter or nest materials or soil (many plants may like soil brought from other places - it's like someone's tilling or bringing them nutritious soil).

  • It spreads seeds farther than they'd usually go.

Small creatures such as worms and insects, not to mention small plants, lichens, moss, and fungus, may survive quite easily and so are being given great transportation to places they wouldn't easily get by themselves. Things can be brought across barriers such as rivers or even over mountains, deserts or seas this way. Similarly, killing off or disrupting some animals may create opportunities for others.

  • Rips away established heavy vegetation making room for other plants to get sunlight and water and have room to grow where they otherwise couldn't.

Each species uses different nutrients and leaves different by-products, this can work a little like crop rotation, as the new plants may appreciate the soil used by the old trees, and eventually new trees may like what those plants have done to the soil. Killing large trees can increase erosion, which is another kind of event that can open up new opportunities for different species.

  • Clears the path for a more abundant ecosystem.

In general, change is often good for other species, and the more species that have opportunity, the healthier the whole ecosystem tends to be, because there are more abundant types of resources that can fall into mutually supporting balance with each other. When circumstances stay the same for too long, then the few species that are best in those static conditions tend to overpopulate and strain their own resources, which can throw things out of balance and cause survival issues for their food, thus themselves, as well as other species.

By now you're probably thinking, "Okay, Janet, thanks for that science lesson but what's the point of all of this?" The point is this:

Chaos and destruction clear the path for you to start anew if you allow yourself to start new.

Admittedly, it's hard to see the bright side of things when shitty things happen to you. It's hard to be grateful for the storm when the storm comes in the form of losing a parent, discovering your partner's been cheating on you, losing friends, a terrible injury or illness, or when your career comes to a standstill or even falls apart completely.

When you have to go through any of those life-changing events, it can hurt... like, a lot. But once you’ve made it through the worst and the dust settles, life has to go on and the opportunity will present itself to change up your life in a more purposeful way. When life happens to you, you only have two choices: you can become bitter or you can become better and you get to choose. Starting over is a natural part of evolving into a smarter, better and stronger version of yourself if you allow yourself to go on the journey of growth and healing.

Never be afraid to fall apart. It is an opportunity to rebuild yourself the way you wish you had been all along.

The process of rebuilding your life from the ground up after any storm won’t be easy. But having a shift in perspective and a plan will greatly increase your chances of crafting the life you want to experience in a way that brings you greater joy and fulfillment.

Here are 5 of my top tips for starting over and rebuilding your life from scratch:

01. / Start with cleaning up the space you currently live in.

Whether you like where you're physically at or not, clean that sh*t up! Clear the space where you spend the most time in of clutter, trash and other debris. It may not sound like a big deal but cleaning up the physical clutter makes the environment less distracting which can lead to a calmer, clearer and more focused mind that will ultimately help you see more clearly the changes that you need to make to get you to where you really want to go.

02. / Mourn the loss of what you lost.

There's nothing that will stop you from making progress in your life faster than sweeping your feelings under the rug. It's natural to think that being tough and pushing through means not having to feel but pretending that something doesn't exist or that you don't feel a certain type of way will always come back to bite you in the butt sooner or later. Most likely it will cause you to act out and have an emotional outburst at the most inappropriate times or it will cause you to sabotage your blessings somewhere down the road. Make peace with reality and work with, not against it. What happened to you was shitty and it really, really hurt. You're allowed to feel that way. Period. *insert a big hug from Janet here*

03. / Reflect on what the f*ck happened and what the f*ck went wrong.

No one starts out planning to fail or ending up in some disaster but it happens and it can happen so quickly that you don't even know what hit you. Whether the disaster you found yourself in was a result of missteps (yours or someone else's) driven by ego, a lack of awareness, miscalculation, denial or simply carelessness, you owe it to yourself to be honest about what the f*ck happened, how it made you f*cking feel, and how the f*ck you're going to fix it.

04. / Revisit your goals and values.

Just like a tornado comes to clear the path and make way for new things to flourish, when a foundation you once thought was solid comes crumbling down, it's an opportunity to rebuild a new foundation that's even bigger, better and more solid than the previous one. This time you get to build things that are more in alignment with what you really want and where you want to go. Begin by asking yourself some or all of these questions:

How do you want to live?

Does your idea align with your values?

What are your values anyway?

What will you do if someone close to you disagrees or tries to tear it down?

What will happen if you find yourself feeling tempted to stray away from it?

Put your ideas, values and answers down on paper so you can see them all in one place and revisit them as many times as you need to until you receive clarity to make your next moves.

05. / Get a mentor.

When you’re trying to rebuild a new foundation for your life, you’ll need some help. Don't fool yourself into thinking that you can handle everything on your own. Don't play yourself. Choose a mentor who has achieved a goal you’ve set your sights on, has reinvented themselves successfully, or just has the qualities that you’re working towards building within yourself. Go towards the people, places and things that call to your soul (not your ego). More than likely, there will be an experience and a lesson necessary for your soul's growth, development and ultimate fulfillment.
